The Dragon Dancers

The 9th Annual Montford Music & Arts Festival was a huge success this past Saturday. It was our biggest ever. Over 6,871 people came to the Festival! Bill and I got the rare opportunity to spend the whole afternoon listening to great music, chatting with neighbors and browsing all the colorful booths of art, one-of-a-kind clothing and local crafts and services. We even got to try out some acupuncture! The weather was perfect for strolling, the food was excellent- what more could we ask? We were only sorry that we could only stay to hear four of the sixteen bands that played on three different stages.

We heard everything from the traditional bluegrass of David Holt and the Lightning Bolts to the soul/funk/R&B of the Secret B Sides and the dreamy indescribably haunting sounds of The Judas Horse. It was a treat for the ears.

Our own Montford Park Players were there as well, performing scenes from their current production of The Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged). You’ve never seen Shakespeare performed quite like this! We can’t wait to see the whole performance when we get to sample our Montford Players VIP package ourselves. They let you actually get a walk on role in costume!

We were so impressed with the artwork this year. It’s not often that you see top quality fine arts at a street festival. Perry Houlditch was able to show us how his extraordinary paintings catch the sunlight and reveal the depth and radiance of his hand produced pigments.

Cindy Riccardelli’s haunting dolls were on display as well. These are not dolls to play with. Each doll is a beautiful piece of art with it’s own personality and definite attitude!

The Dragon Dancers had everyone smiling as they snaked through the crowd and there were plenty of activities for the kids too.

We topped off the day with a relaxing lunch at Nine Mile. A perfect May afternoon in Asheville!
